How to Maintain Focus

In today’s digital age, we’ve advanced productivity in the workplace ten-fold; that is until about mid-day. You can have all of the tools necessary to get your job done and still struggle to complete your to-do list. It all comes down to focus and maintaining it throughout the day. When our minds start to wonder, it can be challenging to reign it in and stay glued to the task at hand. To start, you have to take control of your work environment and get rid of anything distracting. Do you tend to pick up your phone at lunch and accidentally spend over an hour surfing the web and liking pictures on Instagram? Then, schedule an alarm to go off when you need to tuck your cell into a desk drawer and get back to the grind. Learn what helps you stay in a get the job done mindset, then design your surroundings to fit those needs!

If you’re anything like us, then remembering to eat lunch daily can be difficult. When we’re in a focused mindset, it’s a struggle to pull away. However, by not providing your body with the fuel it needs to thrive, you’ll be feeling the effects quickly! At the same time, each day, step away from your work and eat a nutritious meal. Some high-energy foods are bananas, fatty fish, brown rice, sweet potatoes, and eggs!

How much sleep are you getting nightly? Adults should get roughly seven hours of sleep regularly. If you’re getting less, you’re not giving your brain enough time to rest and reset, meaning the following day will be a struggle. Maintaining your focus throughout the day is like a marathon. Crossing the finish line requires dedication, healthy habits, and consistency. Like our first focus tip on ridding your workspace of distractions, you need to do the same at night. Create a routine that you follow each night; this will train your brain to know when to start preparing for sleep. The last step should be to set your alarm, put your phone away, and close your eyes. 

Our last focus tip is for those of you who are losing focus because you’re feeling overwhelmed. If you have a perfectionist personality, it’s natural for you to shut down when there’s too much on your plate. However, when you get these feelings, we suggest you set a SMART goal.

S – Specific

M – Measurable

A – Achievable

R – Relevant

T – Timely

Break your goal down into smaller parts and take it from there. Also, remember that you are in control. If you feel like you have too much going on, take a step back and reevaluate your to-do list!
